Textiles Journey Project...

So, for my textiles project the theme given was "journey" I couldn't think of a past journey that i would want to recreate through textiles, so i decided to create a visual diary for the month of February.
So, i started of by brainstorming the potential outcomes i could create if i was to chose to make a visual diary.
i then began researching several artists like the amazing Rosie James, Sue Stone, Alice Kettle and mannnyyy more for some inspiration in there textile techniques and steps and materials used to create a final piece.

Once all the boring stuff was done, i began making some sketches of random segments of each day. I would do a quick sketch in my A5 textiles book so i could work from these images when it comes to doing something textily .
here are some of the drawings...

Crazy French woman at the market...

Two old ladys at the bus stop bitching about sumat.

The tray of instruments when i had my wisdom teeth removed. I know. Ouch.

Several fashion illustrations from a fashion show.

Stuck it in Photoshop and messed around with the colours then duplicated the same images but adjusting the size and overlapping them

Starbucks Mug. Mmm

Here are several of the finished textiles pieces I will include in my final piece. I have used a variation of techniques but mainly free hand embroidery .

This is a lino print onto calico, then sewn into to bring out certain elements.

A0 Self Portrait Finished!

Finial, Finished. I'm actually quite happy with the outcome. Although I think it doesn't really look like me, everybody else disagrees. Definitely, my favourite part has to be... the tartan shirt.  :)
Any suggestions on how it could be improved...?

A0 Fine Art Self Portrait

Started of by framing a piece of A0 paper with masking tape to give myself a clean border when i finish. I then Create my Grid with 2cm x 2cm squares. Quickly, I sketch out the frame of my face and map out where the facial features will be and light and dark tones.

Using soft black charcole, I get down the ground for my portrait.

It begins to come together by gently adding the facial features and using a rubber to create marks travelling in the right direction, this give the sense of shape and structure.

Done, Well I just need to do the shirt. :)

Jessie J Album Cover...

Front Cover

Back cover

Cd

My last project for Visual communications at college was to produce a single cover from a list of artists. The artists I had to choose from were Jessie J, The ting tings, dizzy rascal and Kanye West. I decided to go with Jessie J - as I am a big fan.
The brief said to choose an unreleased song from their album, It had to be an unrealised song  as I could have been influenced by material already produced for an existing song. So I chose 'Rainbow'
After doing all the boring stuff, like research, I began to photograph textures like fabrics and glitter (textures that I related to Jessie J) I also considered the colours I was going to include. I then created some sketches of Jessie J which I then thought would be a nice front cover.
Using photoshop I started montaging all these different textures together and cropping out geometric shapes and collaging them together surrounding the image of Jessie.
I thought the back cover should be a bit more simple, so I took the glitter element and zoomed in and adjusted the hue to achieve that gorgeous purple with freckles of green and pink which compliments the front cover.
For the CD print, I thought it would be nice to incorporate some hand rendered techniques. so I collaged ripped paper and then machine stitched into it. Then scanned it into the computer on a high res and finished it of by slightly adjusting the brightness/contrast and the vibrancy.

I then thought I would be interesting if I created a contrasting design for the same song. I took inspiration from the likes of Sara Fanelli in how she draws very cute, primitive figures.
I hand drew the rainbow image and collaged some ripped paper, I then scanned that into the computer and using the paint brush in Photoshop I added a slight touch of colour to the hearts.
Yeah, I'm pleased with the two very different outcomes.
